Bishop was trained in the future under harsh conditions. He is an excellent tracker and tactician (even though his methods are a little extreme for our time). Bishop and his two partners, Malcolm and Randall, came to our time through one of Fitzroy's portals. When they were killed during a battle with criminals from the future, Bishop joined the X-Men. Possible Purpose in Exiles: Bishop's two partners never died in battle so Bishop never joined the X-Men. Meaning, that the X-Men were never warned of a traitor to the team. So, Professor X in the form of Onslaught, murdered the X-Men and Bishop's time (the future) never existed.
